ralf-- if the freecache.cgi could run a traceroute at the behest of the redirector, then we could build a collection of traceroutes for researchers to help with building a proximity graph for the complete net. that way we could move the files near the users (at least in terms of hops or ping times).

thanks for all the work on freecache!

We might consider using ping -R instead of traditional traceroute beacuse

A) it's a little more efficient (it doesn't send an ICMP ECHO request for each hop)
B) it's more accurate

Only problem is it limits the diameter of your path to 9 nodes.

A full traceroute gives information about all the intermediate nodes. This can be useful to build a full map of the internet nodes and their timings. This hopefully would allow us to guess network timings for nodes we dont have (other nodes on network segments, and to other freecaches, without having to do everything at runtime).
